- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1½ cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ cup vegetable oil or melted butter
- For the Brown Sugar Sauce:
- 1 cup brown sugar
- ½ cup heavy cream or evaporated milk
- ¼ cup butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Optional Toppings:
- Whipped cream
- Chopped pecans or walnuts
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
- In a large bowl, mix chopped apples, granulated sugar, eggs, oil (or butter), and vanilla until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
- Stir dry ingredients into wet mixture until just combined.
- Pour batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top.
- Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- While the cake bakes, combine brown sugar, cream, and butter in a saucepan. Simmer over medium heat for 3–5 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
- When the cake comes out of the oven, poke holes in the top and pour the warm sauce over evenly.
- Let the cake sit for 15 minutes to absorb the sauce, then serve warm with whipped cream if desired.
Notes
- Add chopped nuts, raisins, or dried cranberries to the batter for extra texture and flavor.
- Swap whole wheat flour for a heartier version.
- The cake can be made in a bundt pan with adjusted bake time.
- Store leftovers covered at room temp for 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
- Brown sugar sauce can be made fresh and poured before serving for best texture.
