Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 medium yellow onion, chopped
- 2 celery stalks, chopped
- 1 green bell pepper, chopped
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
- 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes with juice
- 1 (15 oz) can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 (15 oz) can pinto beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 cup water or beef broth
- 2 tbsp chili powder
- 1 tsp ground cumin
- 1/2 tsp dried oregano
- 1 tsp salt (or to taste)
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp sugar (optional)
- 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper or dash of hot sauce (optional)
Instructions
- Heat a large pot or Dutch oven over medium heat. Brown the ground beef, breaking it up as it cooks. Drain excess fat.
- Add onion, celery, bell pepper, and garlic. Sauté for 5 minutes until softened.
- Stir in tomato sauce, diced tomatoes with juice, kidney beans, pinto beans, and water or broth.
- Add chili powder, cumin, oregano, salt, pepper, sugar (if using), and cayenne or hot sauce (if desired). Stir to combine.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 45 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Serve hot with your favorite toppings.
