Ingredients

Chicken and Gravy

  • 2 pounds boneless skinless chicken breasts
  • 1.74 oz. dry chicken gravy mix (two 0.87 oz. packets)
  • 10.75 oz. can cream of chicken soup
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/8 teaspoon black pepper

Gravy Thickener (Optional)

  • 2 Tbsp. water
  • 2 Tbsp. cornstarch

Instructions

  1. Add Chicken: Place the boneless skinless chicken breasts directly into the slow cooker; no need to pre-cook or brown them.
  2. Prepare Gravy Mixture: In a small bowl, whisk together the dry chicken gravy mix, cream of chicken soup, water, and black pepper until smooth.
  3. Pour Gravy Over Chicken: Pour the prepared gravy mixture evenly over the chicken breasts in the slow cooker.
  4. Slow Cook: Cook on low heat for 6 to 8 hours or on high for 4 hours until the chicken is fully cooked and tender.
  5. Shred Chicken: Using two forks, shred the chicken directly in the slow cooker, mixing it with the gravy.
  6. Thicken Gravy If Needed: If the gravy is too thin due to extra juice from the chicken or added vegetables, mix 2 tablespoons cornstarch with 2 tablespoons water to create a slurry. Stir this into the slow cooker with the shredded chicken, cover, and cook on high for an additional 10 minutes until the gravy thickens.

Notes

  • If your gravy thins out too much, you can add a cornstarch slurry (two tablespoons of cornstarch and two tablespoons of water) just before serving to thicken it.
  • There is no need to brown or pre-cook the chicken; the slow cooking process will make it tender and flavorful.
  • Make sure to use a slow cooker of 3-quart capacity or larger for best results.
