Ingredients

Brownie Base

  • Cooking spray, as needed
  • 1 (18-oz.) box brownie mix, plus ingredients called for on box

Pecan Pie Topping

  • 2/3 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 5 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted and cooled
  • 1 tablespoon molasses
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 cups whole pecans, toasted

Optional Serving

  • Caramel sauce, for serving

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Brownie Base: Preheat the oven to 325°F (163°C). Grease a 9″x9″ baking pan with cooking spray and line it with parchment paper. Prepare the brownie batter according to the box instructions, then pour it into the prepared pan. Bake until the brownies are slightly underbaked and a tester inserted in the center comes out with a few moist crumbs, approximately 20 minutes.
  2. Make Pecan Pie Mixture: While the brownies bake, in a medium bowl whisk together the light corn syrup, brown sugar, melted and cooled butter, molasses, vanilla extract, and kosher salt until smooth. Add the eggs one at a time, whisking until fully combined. Stir in the toasted pecans until they are evenly coated with the mixture.
  3. Top Brownies and Continue Baking: Increase the oven temperature to 350°F (177°C). Evenly spread the pecan pie topping mixture over the baked brownie base. Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 40 to 45 minutes, or until the pecan topping is springy to the touch and has thickened.
  4. Cool and Serve: Remove the brownies from the oven and allow them to cool to room temperature. Refrigerate for about 1 hour until fully chilled and set. Before serving, drizzle with caramel sauce if desired to enhance the flavor.

Notes

  • To toast pecans, spread them in a single layer on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F (177°C) for 5-7 minutes, stirring halfway through to ensure even toasting.
  • For a richer molasses flavor, use dark or robust molasses.
  • Use parchment paper for easy removal and cleaner slicing of brownies.
  • Brownie mix ingredients typically include eggs, water, and oil—follow package instructions precisely.
  • Allow brownies to fully set in the refrigerator for neat slicing and to enhance flavor melding.
  • Caramel sauce is optional but adds a layer of sweetness and decadence.
