These Dr Pepper Ribs are tender, flavorful, and slow-cooked to perfection with a unique twist using Dr. Pepper soda. The ribs are first simmered in the slow cooker to absorb the sweet, smoky flavors, then finished in the oven with a homemade BBQ glaze for a caramelized, sticky coating that’s irresistible.

Ingredients

Meat

  • 4.5 pounds country style ribs

Liquids

  • 2 12 ounce cans Dr. Pepper soda (divided)
  • 3/4 cup BBQ sauce
  • 2 teaspoons liquid smoke

Spices

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Slow Cooker: Pour 1 can of Dr. Pepper soda over the country style ribs in the slow cooker, ensuring the ribs are partially submerged for even cooking and flavor infusion.
  2. Slow Cook the Ribs: Cover the slow cooker and cook the ribs on low for about 7 hours or on high for approximately 4 hours until the meat is tender and cooked through.
  3. Preheat the Oven: Once the ribs are cooked, preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil to catch drips and simplify cleanup.
  4. Prepare Baking Rack: Place a wire rack on the foil-lined baking sheet to allow air circulation around the ribs for even baking and crisping.
  5. Make the BBQ Glaze: In a bowl, mix together 3/4 cup BBQ sauce, 2 teaspoons liquid smoke, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon ground black pepper, and 1/2 cup of the remaining Dr. Pepper soda to create a smoky, flavorful glaze.
  6. Transfer Ribs to Rack: Remove the ribs from the slow cooker carefully and place them onto the wire rack on the baking sheet.
  7. First Glaze and Bake: Brush the ribs generously with the prepared BBQ glaze and bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes to start forming a caramelized coating.
  8. Flip and Glaze Again: Flip the ribs over, brush with more BBQ glaze, and bake for an additional 15 minutes to ensure both sides are sticky and flavorful.
  9. Serve: Remove ribs from the oven, serve hot, and accompany with any remaining BBQ sauce for dipping or extra flavor.

Notes

  • You can substitute country style ribs with baby back ribs if preferred, but adjust cooking time accordingly.
  • For a spicier glaze, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or hot sauce to the BBQ sauce mixture.
  • Make sure to use a wire rack in the oven to allow the glaze to caramelize properly without the ribs sitting in excess sauce.
  • Leftover ribs and sauce can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
