Ingredients

  • 23 cups chopped fresh apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp recommended)
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup vegetable oil or melted butter
  • For the Brown Sugar Sauce:
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • ½ cup heavy cream or evaporated milk
  • ¼ cup butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Optional Toppings:
  • Whipped cream
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, mix chopped apples, granulated sugar, eggs, oil (or butter), and vanilla until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt.
  4. Stir dry ingredients into wet mixture until just combined.
  5. Pour batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top.
  6. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. While the cake bakes, combine brown sugar, cream, and butter in a saucepan. Simmer over medium heat for 3–5 minutes until slightly thickened. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
  8. When the cake comes out of the oven, poke holes in the top and pour the warm sauce over evenly.
  9. Let the cake sit for 15 minutes to absorb the sauce, then serve warm with whipped cream if desired.

Notes

  • Add chopped nuts, raisins, or dried cranberries to the batter for extra texture and flavor.
  • Swap whole wheat flour for a heartier version.
  • The cake can be made in a bundt pan with adjusted bake time.
  • Store leftovers covered at room temp for 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.
  • Brown sugar sauce can be made fresh and poured before serving for best texture.
