Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup baking soda (for water bath)
  • 2 tbsp butter (melted, plus more for brushing)
  • Coarse salt (for topping)

Instructions

  1. Combine warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add flour and salt, mix and knead until dough is smooth and elastic (7–10 minutes).

  4. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  5. Punch down dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each into a rope and form into pretzels.
  6. Boil water with baking soda. Dip each pretzel in the bath for 30 seconds.

  8. Bake for 12–15 minutes until golden brown. Brush with more butter if desired.
  9. Serve warm with your favorite dips or enjoy plain.

Notes

  • Dip in cinnamon sugar after baking for a sweet treat.
  • Stuff with cheese or jalapeños for extra flavor.
  • Make pretzel bites by cutting dough into small pieces before boiling and baking.
  • Freeze for later and reheat in the oven for best results.
