Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour or bread flour
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter or vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix warm water with sugar and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Stir in salt and melted butter or oil. Gradually add flour, one cup at a time, until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape into a loaf. Place in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  6. Cover loosely and let rise again for 30–45 minutes until dough crowns over the pan.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes until golden and hollow-sounding when tapped.
  8. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Brush the top with melted butter after baking for a softer crust.
  • Substitute 1 cup of flour with whole wheat flour for a heartier loaf.
  • Use honey instead of sugar for subtle sweetness.
  • Add herbs like rosemary or garlic powder for a savory twist.
  • Slice and freeze for longer storage; toast from frozen as needed.
