Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups short pasta (elbow, rotini, or penne)
  • 2 1/2 cups water or beef broth
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium-high heat.
  2. Add ground beef, break it up, and cook until browned. Drain excess grease if needed.
  3. Add onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
  4. Stir in tomato sauce, ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, mustard, salt, and pepper.
  5. Add uncooked pasta and water or broth. Stir to combine.
  6. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and cook for 12–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender and sauce thickens.
  7. Stir in shredded cheddar cheese until melted and creamy.
  8. Garnish with fresh parsley before serving, if desired.

Notes

  • Swap beef for ground chicken or plant-based meat for a variation.
  • Add corn or peas for extra color and sweetness.
  • Mix in hot sauce or chili powder for a spicy kick.
  • Add a spoonful of cream cheese or sour cream for a creamy finish.
  • Freeze leftovers in airtight containers for up to 2 months.
