  • Cuisine: American

Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil or melted butter

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add oil, salt, and half the flour. Stir to combine, then gradually add the remaining flour until a dough forms.
  3. Knead on a floured surface for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 to 1.5 hours until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the dough and shape into a loaf. Place in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  6. Cover and let rise for another 30–40 minutes.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes, until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  8. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Use half whole wheat flour for a more wholesome loaf.
  • Swap sugar for honey for a touch of sweetness.
  • Add herbs or garlic powder to the dough for extra flavor.
  • Sprinkle oats or sesame seeds on top before baking for a crusty finish.
  • Freeze sliced bread in a zip-top bag; toast slices directly from frozen.
