Ingredients

  • 810 slices soft white sandwich bread
  • Optional: 4 tbsp cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 12 tbsp butter, for frying
  • Optional toppings: powdered sugar, icing glaze, maple syrup for dipping

Instructions

  1. Mix sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl; set aside.
  2. Flatten each bread slice with a rolling pin and trim off the crusts.
  3. If using cream cheese, spread a thin layer over each flattened slice, then sprinkle evenly with the cinnamon‑sugar mixture.
  4. Roll each slice tightly and place seam‑side down on a plate or tray.
  5. In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, and vanilla extract to make the French toast batter.
  6. Dip each roll‑up into the batter, coating all sides thoroughly.
  7. Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat. Place roll‑ups seam‑side down first, and cook for about 2–3 minutes per side, turning gently, until golden and crisp all around.
  8. Let them cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar or drizzle with icing glaze. Serve warm with maple syrup for dipping, if desired.

Notes

  • Add thin apple or banana slices inside before rolling for a fruity variation.
  • Substitute Nutella in place of cinnamon‑sugar for a chocolate‑hazelnut version.
  • Top with a cream‑cheese icing or sprinkle chopped nuts or mini chips on top if desired.
  • Assemble ahead and refrigerate; dip and cook the roll‑ups fresh in the morning.
  • Freeze cooked roll‑ups in a single layer and reheat from frozen in the oven or toaster oven.
