Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature

2 cups granulated sugar

2 large eggs

8 ounces almond paste

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons granulated sugar, for topping

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×9-inch baking pan with butter. (You may also use a 9×13-inch pan for thinner bars.)

In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter and 2 cups of sugar together for 3–4 minutes until light and airy.

Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition.

Mix in the almond paste until fully incorporated.

Add the flour and mix just until combined, making sure no dry spots remain.

Spoon the dough into the prepared pan and spread evenly to the edges.

Sprinkle the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar evenly over the top.

Bake for 45 minutes if using a 9×9-inch pan or 35 minutes if using a 9×13-inch pan, until the top is golden.

Allow the bars to cool completely before slicing and serving.

Notes

Almond paste (not marzipan) is essential for the authentic flavor and texture.

Let the bars cool fully to ensure clean slices.

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
