Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water or hot coffee

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla; mix until smooth.
  4. Slowly stir in boiling water or hot coffee until batter is thin and well combined.
  5. Pour batter evenly into prepared pans.
  6. Bake 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.
  8. Frost with chocolate buttercream, ganache, or desired frosting.
