Ingredients

Roasted Garlic:

810 garlic cloves

2 tbsp olive oil

Pinch of salt

Garlic Butter Custard:

Roasted garlic (from above)

½ cup (113g) butter, melted

1 egg

¼ cup (60g) milk

½ tsp salt

½ tsp paprika

2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

Assembly:

12 King’s Hawaiian Original Hawaiian Sheet Rolls (or 1 large French baguette)

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

Fresh parsley and chili flakes, for garnish

Instructions

Roast the Garlic:

Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

Toss peeled garlic cloves with olive oil and a pinch of salt. Place in a covered mini oven-safe pot or wrap in foil.

Bake for ~20 minutes until soft and golden. Mash with a fork.

Make Garlic Butter Custard:

In a bowl, whisk mashed roasted garlic, melted butter, egg, milk, salt, paprika, and chopped parsley until well combined.

Prepare the Bread:

Lower oven temp to 350°F (175°C).

Slice Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally to create two flat sheets. Bake cut-side up for 8–10 minutes until lightly toasted.

Dip each bread half into the garlic butter custard, coating all sides.

Bake and Finish:

Place back on the baking tray and bake for 15–18 minutes until golden.

Top with shredded mozzarella and broil for 3–5 minutes until cheese is bubbly and golden.

Garnish with parsley and chili flakes. Slice and serve warm.

Notes

Hawaiian rolls give this recipe a soft, slightly sweet base.

For a sharper flavor, mix in cheddar with mozzarella.

Easily prep ahead by roasting garlic and making the custard in advance.

Great paired with pasta, soup, or salad.
