Ingredients

  • 4 cups bread flour
  • 2 tsp instant yeast
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 1 tbsp sugar or honey
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp baking soda (for boiling water bath)
  • Optional toppings: sesame seeds, poppy seeds, everything seasoning, etc.

Instructions

  1. Mix warm water, yeast, and sugar in a bowl. Let it sit until foamy.
  2. Stir in the flour and salt to form a stiff dough, then knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  3. Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down the dough, divide it into 8 pieces, and shape each into a ball.
  5. Poke a hole in the center of each ball and stretch to form a ring shape.
  6. Let the bagels rest for 10 minutes while boiling a large pot of water and adding baking soda.
  7. Boil each bagel for 1 minute per side, then place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  8. Brush with egg wash (optional) and add your favorite toppings.
  9. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 20–25 minutes, until golden brown and firm.
