Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey)
  • 1 head butter, romaine, or iceberg lettuce (separated into leaves)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp ginger, minced
  • 1/2 small onion or 2 scallions, finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce or tamari
  • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce or oyster sauce
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar or lime juice
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tsp brown sugar or honey (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes or sriracha (optional)
  • 1/2 cup shredded carrots or diced bell peppers (optional)
  • 2 tbsp fresh cilantro or basil, chopped (for garnish)
  • 1 tsp toasted sesame seeds (for garnish)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Heat sesame oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Sauté chopped onion or scallions for about 2 minutes until fragrant.
  2. Add garlic and ginger; cook for 30 seconds until aromatic.
  3. Add ground beef, season with salt and pepper, and cook until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  4. Stir in soy sauce, hoisin sauce, rice vinegar, and sugar or honey. Add sriracha or pepper flakes if desired.
  5. Add optional veggies like shredded carrots or bell peppers; cook for 2 more minutes until slightly softened.
  6. Adjust seasoning with more soy sauce, vinegar, or sweetener if needed.
  7. Spoon beef mixture into lettuce leaves. Top with chopped herbs and sesame seeds.
  8. Serve immediately, letting everyone assemble their own wraps.

Notes

  • Use tamari for gluten-free wraps.
  • Prep filling and lettuce separately for easy make-ahead meals.
  • Add peanut butter or tahini for a creamy flavor twist.
  • Try with ground chicken, pork, or plant-based meat.
