Ingredients

  • Apples (Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or your favorite baking apples), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • Granulated sugar
  • Brown sugar
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Ground nutmeg (optional)
  • Lemon juice
  • All-purpose flour or cornstarch (for thickening apples)
  • For the crisp topping:
  • Rolled oats
  • All-purpose flour
  • Brown sugar
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Salt
  • Unsalted butter, melted
  • Optional: chopped nuts (pecans or walnuts)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, toss the apple slices with lemon juice, both sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and flour or cornstarch until evenly coated.
  3. Transfer the apple mixture to the prepared dish and spread it into an even layer.
  4. In another bowl, combine oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Pour in melted butter and stir until crumbs form. If desired, stir in chopped nuts.
  5. Sprinkle the crisp topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 40–45 minutes, until the topping is golden and the apples are bubbling around the edges.
  7. Remove from the oven and let the crisp cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Spiced blend: Add ¼ teaspoon ground ginger or cloves to the apple filling for extra warmth.
  • Gluten-free: Use gluten-free oats and a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend.
  • Nutty upside: Fold chopped pecans or walnuts into both the filling and topping.
  • Fruit combo: Use half apples and half pears, peaches, or berries.
  • Streusel twist: Add a handful of shredded coconut to the topping for extra texture.
  • For storage, refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. To reheat, microwave individual portions for 20–30 seconds or reheat in a 350°F oven for about 10 minutes until bubbling again.
