Ingredients

  • For the dough:
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tbsp instant or rapid-rise yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water (110°F)
  • 2 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • For the topping:
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp grated parmesan cheese
  • 1 tsp chopped fresh or dried parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C) and grease or line a baking dish with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 3–5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Add oil or butter, egg, salt, and half the flour. Mix, then add remaining flour to form a soft, slightly sticky dough.
  4. Knead dough for 2–3 minutes on a floured surface until smooth.
  5. Divide into 12 equal pieces and shape into balls. Place in the baking dish.
  6. Let rolls rest for 5–10 minutes while preparing garlic butter.
  7. Melt butter, stir in garlic, and brush some over the rolls.
  8. Bake for 12–15 minutes, until golden brown.
  9. Brush with remaining garlic butter, sprinkle with parmesan and parsley. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use shredded mozzarella for a cheesy variation.
  • Add dried Italian herbs to the dough for more flavor.
  • Skip garlic and parmesan and use honey butter for a sweet version.
